How to change Number of Rows on Windows 8 Metro Screen

Windows 8 took a great leap by adding an entirely new Start Menu directly on the screen. This start menu is bit different and cover the entire screen. Which is called as Metro UI. Metro UI has a tablet type interface. It looks Microsoft is trying to unify the entire user interface. But there are very few customization options you have .

So today I am going to show you the way through which you can add more rows in the Windows 8 Metro Screen. This means adding a lot more visibility. More rows mean more icons. The process is simple and does not consist of major tweaks. You can reset the settings back by turning off the feature and your Windows 8 Metro UI will be same as it was before.

    First Method:

In this method we are going to use the internal settings of windows to increase the number of tiles on the mains screen. And if you want the old way of your windows back you can just turn off the settings back again. We are just going to make things bigger on the screen.

    1. Press the windows Start key from keyboard to launch the Metro UI screen.
    2. Now access the charm bar from the right side. At the bottom you can get Settings icon. Click on that.
    3. From the top the second option is Tiles. Click on that.
    4. And then choose Show More Tiles.
    5. And if you want to turn that thing off you have to just drag the slider back.

In this way you can see more icons on the screen.

    Second Method:

The second way of doing this is using a vbscript. The script will make the icons on the tiles bit bigger and will help you to browse more things. For that you have to download Change_Number_of_Apps_Tile_Rows_on_Start.vbs from the web. This script is the best way to increase the rows on the tiles.

    • Download Change_Number_of_Apps_Tile_Rows_on_Start.vbs and save it on your desktop. Just ensure that the extension .vbs will remain the same.
    • Now double click on the vb script to launch the same. If you are prompted by UAC then click on Yes.
    • The next thing that you can see on the screen is vbscript dialog box.
    • In the box you will have to add the number for amount of rows you want. Just add that and click on ok.
    • IF there is any issue with this script then you have to change the dpi scanning of start screen which will resolve the issue.

    Third Method:

The third way is margin changes in the Windows registry. Windows Registry is the core of windows and it is very important to create a backup first. Because after making changes if you face any issue then you can restore that back.

    • Click on Start and then click on the run box.
    • Type regedit in the same and click on ok.
    • You have to navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > ImmersiveShell > Grid.
    • At the right side you can see different type of entireties. Look for Layout_MaximumRowCount first. Right click on the same and change the DWORD value. It is by default 6. And you can add different DWORD value to increase the rows on the main screen.

    For 800x600 Default is 3. Max = 3 and Min = 1
    For 1024x768 Default is 4. Max = 4 and Min = 1
    For 1152x864 Default is 5. Max = 5 and Min = 1
    For 1280x720 Default is 4. Max = 4 and Min = 1
    For 1280x900 Default is 5. Max = 5 and Min = 1
    For 1280 x 930 Default is 5. Max = 6 and Min = 1
    For 1280x1024 Default is 5. Max = 6 and Min = 1
    For 1440x900 Default is 5. Max = 5 and Min = 1
    For 1600x900 Default is 5. Max = 5 and Min = 1
    For 1680x1050 Default is 6. Max = 6 and Min = 1
    For 1900x1080 Default is 5. Max = 6 and Min = 1
    For 1920x1080 Default is 6. Max = 6 and Min = 1
    For 1920x1200 Default is 6. Max = 7 and Min = 1
    For 1260x1920 Default is 6. Max = 10 and Min = 1
Make changes as per your need and close registry editor.
