The installation is affected due to a older version of MSE or similar tool installed in your system. You have to remove that first. Now to find that you will have to go in Control Pane > Program and Features. At the left side you can see View Install updates. Just find any related update about MSE or Windows Defender. Remove it and install MSE back again. This would work.

    Microsoft Security Essentials Error 0x8004FF81

So unhappy with Microsoft Security Essentials. Just installed first time and landed on a error that I cannot fix. I had tried so many things here but nothing works. It is a new system and this Microsoft Security Essentials error is messing up with the entire pc performance.

I am getting a Error 0x8004FF81. The message that comes on the screen is "Cannot complete the Security Essentials installation" What to do?

There are two possible cause for this problem. First msconfig is not able to execute on its own. And the error appeared. It can be due to some third party security application in the pc or through damage system file. It can be a virus problem also.

The second is MSASCui.exe is already in the system and it fails to execute. You have to repair your system registry for that. Now there are few tools which can help. You can try CCleaner.

Just a tiny registry fix is enough to fix the problem. For that you have to launch registry editor.
Type regedit in Start > Run box.
And then go to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options/ here you have to find svchost.exe.
You have to remove Debugger entry from here.
    And from msconfig disable auto-launch of Msconfig.exe, MpCmdRun.exe, MpUXSrv.exe, MSASCui.exe, msmpeng.exe, and msseces.exe.
