    Samsung Galaxy Grand Neo Review

Samsung’s latest releases have been all about the huge screen size and good performance. Samsung launched the galaxy grand Neo along the same line of thoughts – huge 5 inch display with a quad core 1.2Ghz processor. Well the screen is really huge enough to appeal to huge crowds; however the quality part is a bit of concern. The phone is priced at around Rs. 18,000 INR which is not a very competitive pricing, given the huge screen handsets getting cheap now.

The phone doesn’t look very different from the original Galaxy grand but has many step down in its features. It does offer a good deal of things like a strong processor, 1GB RAM, 5MP camera, android OS 4.2 JB and an expandable memory. As you can see it doesn’t have an 8MP camera like the one in original Grand, nor the cortex A-9 processor. Take a look in to the actual performance of the handset and decide how good the new grand is for Rs. 18,000.

    Samsung Galaxy Grand Neo specifications:

    • Android 4.2 JellyBean Operating system
    • Dual SIM
    • 5-inch capacitive touch screen display
    • 800 x 480 Pixels resolution
    • 1.2 GHz quad-core processor
    • 1GB of RAM
    • 5 Megapixel rear camera with Auto Focus and LED Flash
    • 0.3 Megapixel secondary camera
    • 16GB internal memory, expandable upto 64GB using microSD Card
    • 3G HSPA+, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n , Bluetooth, GPS
    • 2100 mAh battery

    Design and packaging:

The Galaxy Grand Neo has the usual rectangular Samsung design with a huge screen and the three navigation keys below it. It has the dimensions of 143.7 x 77.1 x 9.6 mm and weighs around 163g almost similar to the features of galaxy grand. The only difference you find in the body is the matte finish back unlike the usual shiny plastic back on the Samsung devices. This phone features a 5inch display with earpiece above it. You also see a couple of sensors and front facing camera on above the display.

Along the edges, you can see the volume rocker, power/unlock button to the right, 3.55mm audio jack on the top and the microUSB port and micro phone pin hole towards the bottom. Turning around the handset you can see 5MP camera with a single LED flash.

Towards the bottom there is a loudspeaker grill. The back panel is removable, with in which there is a 2100mAh removable battery. Here you can also see the SIM slot and the MicroSD slot too.

The device feels good in hands and the best thing is that back panel is quite resistant to finger prints. However its time that Samsung works on the design and gives its handsets a fresh look since it has become difficult to recognize mid-range phones with the expensive once as all of them look almost alike.

Re: Samsung Galaxy Grand Neo Review

As mentioned in the hardware part, this phone is backed up by a 2100mAh battery which is really strong and provides a backup of near about 50hrs standby time. This means you can easily use the phone for two days without charging under normal usage. It supports really long hours of voice calling.

However if you surf for a long time and spend too much time watching videos and gaming then the battery is going to give up too early; It would last for a day in such case. You can always go for the battery saver apps to enhance your battery life and push it to the maximum level. There are also many third party apps in the android market that are really good and manage battery very well.

    Display / Screen:

The 5inch display is something that is getting too common these days. The quality of the display lies in its resolution and ppi. The sad part with the galaxy grand Neo is that it has less than optimal 186ppi. Well, donít expect HD images and videos to look very great on this one. Contrast on the screen is not impressive and viewing angles were average. Colours look dull when you watch from sides as it has a WVGA display.

As far sunlight readability is concerned, it is fine and text was readable without much problem. Since itís a budget device you cannot expect the impressive HD LED screen found on the expensive handset on this one. Large screen offers really good comfort for typing. Even in this phone the buttons are very well designed and less crammed. Overall the display is fine and since its huge watching videos and reading text feels good.

Camera section of this phone is same as that of other entry-level phones. Samsung Grand Neo has got 5MP camera which shoots video with 720p @ 30fps, very common in every mid-range phone. Grand Neoís 5MP camera can click good still photos and the camera is provided with many settings so that you can make your every click customized.

Camera lacks Image stabilization, which makes some of the click washed out. Resolution and pixel density of the phone is very low which makes the click look very pixelated, recording at 720p also seems average. You can click photos while shooting and images comes out same as 720p. Camera is added with shoot and sound feature which means you can click images and add sound to that image. Audio quality of the videos is loud and clear.

    Hardware and Performance:

Samsung’s entire phone is best known for the performance associated with the device. Tradition is carried forward in Galaxy Grand Neo. Samsung has powered Grand Neo with a powerful processor to carry out all operations very fast. Quad-core processor and RAM are the core part in every phone, which means more the strength of processor and RAM, faster and competent the phone will be.

Grand Neo comes with 1.2 GHz quad-core processor on Broadcom BCM23550 chipset along with 1GB RAM, which means Grand Neo will tackle all the heavy instructions assigned to it very easily. Multitasking is the key source for good processor and you will find this feature on your Grand Neo. Apart from this Grand Neo is featured with VideoCore IV GPU which is good enough to take all the graphic related instructions smoothly.

I found no lag and no hitches while playing game which clearly indicates that Samsung has installed best configuration for Grand Neo with respect to its price.

    Software and User Interface:

Samsung has its own UI called TouchWiz which is commonly found in all the flagship of Samsung. Samsung Grand Neo is also installed with the Android 4.2 JellyBean and TouchWiz Nature UX skinned interface. Grand Neo is motorized by quad-core processor so running TouchWiz Nature UX is very smooth. TouchWiz of Samsung is very light and very impressive in handling.

You can customize your home screen easily and also have different styles of lock screen on your Samsung Grand Neo. All Android phones have notification bar that you have to drag down to see the notification received on your phone. Notification bar can be customized as per the users wish. If you drag your notification bar with two fingers then you will see the set of toggles which you can edit and adjust on your notification bar.

You can have as many widgets on your Grand Neo, which gives you direct access to the app from home screen itself. Apart from all this, you have access to all the Google apps that run pretty fast in this device.

Samsung has fairly adjusted the specs and features keeping the Samsung Grand Neo’s budget in mind. Large screen is going to attract most of the users; however on the other side it has low resolution. Coming out with 5MP camera was a smart move from Samsung to keep the budget low. Camera response is average and video captured by the camera is also average. Under its hoods it possesses a powerful quad engine on low budget chipset of Broadcom which helped Samsung to reduce the cost of phone.

Android version needs to be upgraded. Samsung may provide upgrade later to its new flagship but for now users will have to operate Android 4.2.2 version. So in all you will get big screened phone with quad-core processor, average camera and average battery life. There are many other options in the market if brand name is not a big concern for you. So, if you think spending Rs. 18,000 INR for this is not worth you have other options like LG and Micromax handsets that have really good feature and are quite budget friendly too.
