Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition Review

Last years Flagship Premium Phablet "Galaxy Note 3" indeed was indeed great hit for Samsung in the gadget's marlet because of its premium hardware, Software and of course all new design. Its powerful HD display, processor, stylus won the hearts of many. Samsung is quite impressed by its sales I think, may be that why they now decided to come with the new 2014 Edition of "Galaxy 10.1" Tablet to provide a bit more space, slightly more powerful processor and much better brilliant display. The new Galaxy 10.1 2014 Edition has a great 10.1 inch display with a 2600x1600-pixel resolution. It has the very useful stylus attached to it along with a really powerful 8220mAh battery.

Many changes are made in its design with the shiny soft back converted to leather like feel and speaker added to the either side of it. Overall effect is overwhelming. Now the most important part is that of the pricing that would help you decide whether to consider it or not. The 10.1 version is priced at £399 (Best Buy Rs. 49,470/- in India) which is apparently the cost of Apple iPad Air too. It looks too costly; however it is one of the fastest android devices with amazing display. Now is it worth considering this device over Apple iPad air is your concern. I’ll make it easy by giving you a detailed idea of this device. But before going there, let's have a look at the Highlights of Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition:

    • Android 4.3 JellyBean with Samsung TouchWiz UI
    • 10.1 inch TFT LCD display
    • 2560 x 1600 pixels resolution
    • 1.9 GHz quad-core Exynos 5 Octa processor
    • 3GB of RAM
    • 8 Megapixel rear camera with LED Flash and BSI sensor
    • 2 Megapixel front facing camera with BSI sensor
    • 1080p Full HD video recording
    • 32GB internal storage memory, Expandable upto 64Gb using MicroSD Card
    • S-Pen stylus
    • 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (2.4 & 5 GHz), Wi-Fi Direct, AllShareCast, BT4.0, USB2.0, GPS and GLONASS
    • 8220 mAh battery

    Design and Packaging:

Samsung note 10.1 has some notable differences in its hardware from note 3. The 10.1 edition has soft leather like look in the back; however it feels nothing like leather. The built is of plastic but not the smooth and glossy one like the note 3. The front has the same conventional Samsung look; the overall effect is cool.

The dimensions of the note 10.1 version are243.1mm x 171.4mm x 7.9mm. The device weighs around 535grams and as it’s quite huge, it doesn’t fit into palms easily, you need to be careful while handling it. Below the screen you can see the home button and the menu and return option. As you take a glance around the device you see the power button and volume button neatly placed.

There is a 3.5mm headphone along the edges and a microSD card slot. On the either side of the device you would find powerful stereo speakers. It also holds infrared blaster which is basically like a remote for your TV. Along the right side there is sleek stylus called the note S pen. The pen is sharp and nicely designed to be used efficiently on the device. It gets comfortable while using the stylus and you can write notes or sketch anything you like very precisely.

Above the display there is a 2MP camera along with sensors. Talking about sensor, it has Accelerometer, Digital compass, Light, Gyroscope sensors. There is no LED notification light to notify when the battery is low or when there is any new notification. As you turn back the device you can see the 8MP camera with a LED flash.

Within back case you see the 8220mAhbattery, which is very powerful and reliable. It was also noted that the device doesn’t heat up under continuous usage for a long time.

    Display / Screen:

A significant enhancement is seen in the display quality. As compared to the note 3 it has more space to browse and better resolution. As compared to the 1280x800 resolution of the earlier version, the note 10.1 has a great resolution of 2560x1600-pixels. Obviously, things are much brighter, sharper and clearer now. Small text is easily comprehensible and HD pics and video is a treat to watch on the huge screen. The colors look vibrant and very clear. Sunlight readability is fine and the viewing angles seemed decent to me.

Although, there is a slight variation in the colors when you look at from side, it doesn’t really affect the overall view. 1080p videos appear undeniably elegant and flawless. Every detail looks pronounced and sharp. Real Racing 3 and other HD graphics games looked rich and give a new experience.

    Performance and Hardware:

Galaxy Note 10.1, as I mentioned before, is one of the fastest android tablet seen yet. It is powered by Samsung’s Exynos 5420 chipset with a quad core cluster at 1.9GHz and another quad core cluster at 1.3GHz. Over n above, it comes with a 3GB RAM support which boosts the performance to the maximum level. The hardware is very powerful and allows multitasking very smoothly. Switching apps was quick and there is no waiting for apps to open, everything is fast as ever.

Samsung’s TouchWiz UI is better than before, with some lag while switching between home screen and app. With two speaker mounted on either side, the audio clarity is good and sound is loud. There is a good improvement in the left right audio balance and audio tone due to the Adapt sound feature in the device. It has 16/32/64GB user memory and micro SD slot expandable up to 64 GB. it has connectivity like 3G, Bluetooth V 4.0, Samsung Kies air, USB 2.0 Host, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n (2.4 & 5 GHz), Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi Bonding. Wi-Fi connectivity was no problem and there was no lag or dropping of connection. Gaming performance is amazing and very smooth even while playing heavy games.

    Operating System and User interface:

The Samsung 10.1 2014 version runs on Android 4.3 Jelly bean and the Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. The UI is smooth and the device offers a number of features. Apart from TouchWiz it has many Samsung Apps and a Samsung Hub. The smart stay app in it is pretty useful and the Pop up play is no less entertaining. Like other android 4.3 device it has the quick glance screen where you can see all the notification in a go.

There are many more shortcuts to enable the smooth handling of device, considering the huge size. Google apps like Google play, Gmail, Google maps are readily available. Syncing with Google calendar and other Google apps is very easy and quick. To enhance the user experience, as mentioned in the hardware, it holds the S pen stylus and has S note, S planner etc. to scribble down the notes easily in no time. The music player holds a detailed cube based equalizer setting to customize the music according to our taste.

The 10.1 version holds an 8MP rear camera with a LED flash. There is not much to say about the output since it like any other 8MP camera and I did not find anything extraordinary here. The photos are decent and bright. Colors are fine, though sometime it does look washout; especially the white color. Night mode isnít very impressive and low light photos were fine, not great.

Outdoor photos under ideal light are bright and sharp. The 2MP front camera is good for video chatting. You can click self-portrait, but donít expect good quality photos. There are many photos enhancing app that it supports to enhance the images after the click. Under setting options you would find a number of modes to adjust the camera the way you want.

Samsung has ensured that the new note 10.1 doesnít compromise anywhere. May be thatís why this device comes with a very strong 8220mAh battery. The battery would back up the device for really a long stretch under normal conditions. How long the battery should last depends on the user.

If you have heavy apps running in the background all time like the smart stay, multi window plus heavy gaming, video streaming for a long time then it behaves like any other normal android tablet battery life. There are battery saver apps that you can depend on to keep it running for a long time. Turn of connectivity like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi etc. when not in use as this consumes a lot of charge. It stays for up to 9hrs under continuous usage.

Coming to the concluding part, you would know by now, the 10.1 2014 edition offers really a good number of things. First of all is the brilliant display, very powerful processor, a decent RAM and to top it all a very powerful battery. The device is filled with numerous apps, though some of them you would hardly use.

The stylus adds to the value and it is really useful as you cannot always type things while using big device. At £399you really are getting a lot of stuffs. If cost is really your concern then you can go for the 16GB version with Wi-Fi only which would cost you much less.
