Manually update Android 4.4.1 Kitkat Firmware in Nexus 5

This guide is for those who want to install Android 4.4.1 firmware on Nexus 5. This is a manual process. The new model in the market is already coming with Android 4.4. But if you had missed or want to test custom rom or want to root the device then you can go ahead with manual installation. This rom offers you rooting. You can root the device and add more additional features in the phone. Also my guide is for those who do not want to ahead with the ADB process.

ADB is a bit complex to manage because here you need windows system and bit knowledge of using command line utility. We are going to use CF Root method here. This is another easy process and is not at all complicated. Once you follow my process you can then go ahead with custom rom installation method. You can install applications that need root access. Before going ahead you must checkout the requirement panel. This is necessary to follow.

    • Go with complete backup. Especially your contacts. The process is going to wipe out everything. So you can take a full phone backup and then only go ahead.
    • Go in Settings and then tap on about. Look for Build Number. Tap on that for 7 times to open Developer options. Then enable USB Debugging.
    • Install the latest Nexus 5 usb drivers in your system.
    • Before origin ahead charge your phone up to 80%. Do not go with low charging the phone can brick.
    • Download the Nexus 5 CF Root Package.
    • Download Android SDK.

    Installation Process:

    • Download and install Android SDK on your system. You have to double check that usb debugging is enabled in your system. Or else the process will fail. I had mentioned the process above for enabling this.
    • The next process is to connect your phone to the pc through usb cable. And then enter to fast boot mode. This is only possible when your phone has an unlocked boot loader. If it is locked then you have to go ahead with unlocking it. For that type adb reboot boot loader in cmd while the phone is connected to the pc. Then type fast boot oem unlock. This will unlock the boot loader.
    • Once you are in fast boot you have to extract all content in android-sdk-windowsplatform-tools folder. Make one with the same name in C drive. And extract everything in that.
    • Now install CF Root on your nexus phone. Turn off the phone after installing that.
    • Reboot by holding volume up + volume down + power. The phone will go in fast boot.
    • Once done in your windows system launches cmd and type Run root-windows.bat. In the same way in Linux you have to use chmod +x & Run And in mac you have to use chmod +x & Run
    • The process will take some time. Device might reboot sometime. Once done enjoy rooted Nexus 5.
