Update Sony Xperia Z to Android 4.4 Kitkat using Custom AOSP ROM

Sony Xperia Z is a high end Smartphone offering good screen size and amazing hardware configuration. The device offers you advance multi-tasking features and smooth layout also. It provides you Quad-core Processor with 13MP camera. This phone is has ideal camera features. The phone is right now running on 4.1 Jellybean OS and has already received the update of 4.2.2. Sony has not yet announced anything about Android 4.4 Kitkat update.

But thanks to a unofficial AOSP ROM you can now have the latest OS on your device. This ROM is usually released for HTC One, Nexus and LG Optimus and it also works on Sony Xperia Z. Being an AOSP ROM it comes loaded with stock android features. That means you are not going to get the Timescape UI. Almost all AOSP ROMs are near to stock roms which is released unofficially and has no manufacturer support. To install this you will have to root your phone or else it will not work. Rooting allows you to have super user access so that you can overwrite the rom and install additional things on it. Remember that after installing this rom your phone warranty is void.

    • Charge your phone and ensure that there is at least 80% of battery power left on the phone. Note, battery should not get drained during the installation process or the phone may get dead.
    • Go in Settings > Manage Applications > Development > and enable USB Debugging from this section.
    • Download and install the original Sony Xperia USB Drivers.
    • The rom requires a rooted phone. You have to root the phone and install CWM Recovery on the same. Or else the process will not work.
    • Rooting allow you to access the internal rom. So you can install a good backup app like Titanium Pro and copy everything in the SD card. It will create a image file which can be restored easily when there is any problem.
    • Download AOSP ROM and save it on your desktop
    • Download GAPPS and save it. later you will have to move the Gapps and the ROM package to your Phone's SD Card.
    • You will need a memory card for it. Just check that it has around 500MB or higher space left.
    • Although the ROM has been tested successfully on Xperia devices, we are not responsible if anything goes wrong your phone. You have to do it on your own risk.

    Installation Method:

    • Copy the AOSP ROM in the memory card. Then turn off your phone.
    • You have to now boot the device is custom recovery mode. You can do that by pressing the Power key + volume up and down key at the same time. The phone will boot in recovery mode. Choose the volume key for navigation up down and power to select.
    • First you have to factory reset the phone. That is why I had asked you to take full backup. Run a full factory reset.
    • Run Wipe Cache partition and Wipe Dalvik Cache at the end.
    • Once the above steps are over go back on the main screen and then through volume key choose Install from SD Card.
    • You will have to choose the ROM file which is stored in the memory card.
    • Choose Yes to install it. Wait back until the process is over. It will take some time to complete.
    • Once done reboot the phone back and enjoy the new rom with new Kitkat Features.
