How to Root Google Nexus 5 - Step by Step

Google Nexus 5 is a first phone to come loaded with Android Kitkat OS. This is one of the most anticipated releases of the year. Android Kitkat is an updated OS offering you good performance and great new features. Many of you might be thinking of rooting this phone. Rooting provide us more power over the existing rom. We have a super user access through which we can do anything. We can add custom rom, backup data and restore it whenever needed. So here I am going to show you different options through which you can root the device and try advance features on the same. The process to root Nexus 5 is very easy. But there are two things you will have to do on this.

The first is unlocking the boot loader so that we can boot in recovery mode and do changes. Then come the rooting process which is very simple. Later due to any reason, if you want to remove the root from your device, then check this guide 'How to unroot and install Stock ROM in Nexus 5'. The process requires some requirements before moving ahead. There are maximum chances of losing data. So better backup everything before going ahead.

    • Backup your phone data. Backup the contacts, message and settings. You can use Titanium Backup pro for that.
    • Ensure that your phone has maximum battery left. It must be above 60% for this process.
    • Download ADB kit from web.
    • Download SuperSU android app/CF Auto Root.
    • Ensure that you had installed the latest usb drivers in your pc.
    • Download fast boot

    Rooting Process:

    • Rooting require to unlock the boot loader first. Without that you cannot boot in recovery mode. For that refer to this guide : How to Unlock Boot loader in Google Nexus 5.
    • Once you are done with unlocking the boot loader then next step is to root the phone.
    • This can be done through installing CWM or running the SuperSU app on the phone. I think if you go with CWM then it is far better.
    • You can download the apk file add that in your phone. While the other phone is to run CF-Auto-Root.
    • For CF-Auto-Root download the file and extract its content on your desktop.
    • Boot your phone in recovery mode by holding volume down + Volume up and power key. Connect the phone to pc via usb cable.
    • Run root-windows.bat from the CF-Auto-Root folder.
    • The same thing can be done through Super SU app. You have to copy this file in the phone storage.
    • Boot back in recovery mode and choose install from SD card. Choose That's all. The phone is rooted.
