Microsoft Edge browser to support HTML5 and Premium Media in Windows 10

Microsoft has officially announced that their next-gen browser Edge will support HTML5 specifications and Premium Media. Nowadays browsers are moving towards more secure extension models instead of being dependent on Plug-ins. Some of the major browsers like Chrome and Microsoft Edge are are bidding adieu to their plug-ins like NPAPI and ActiveX. The replacement of web plug-in based delivery modes, like Flash or Silverlight with unified video players that are based on HTML5 specifications plus independent of plug-ins there is kind of a big change in web Media industry.

Over the period of time HTML5 has evolved a lot and now it has capabilities that other systems possess and unlike other Systems, HTML5 does not need to be installed or downloaded on browsers, as it will run automatically on the browser that supports it.

We are going now to dive into some technical details of Plug-in free media and HTML5 so be prepared.

    Microsoft Edge and Silverlight

Due to use of more secure media solutions based on HTML5 extensions Microsoft has removed support for ActiveX from Microsoft Edge and it also includes removing supports of Silverlight as well. But ActiveX is still supported in Internet Explorer 11.

    Interoperable Media across Browsers

Plug-ins like Silverlight has many versions to support the interoperability. This is becoming more difficult as devices and platforms that support bowsers are increasing rapidly. So old plug-ins for Media should be replaced with new a system based on DASH, MSE, EME and CENC. The good news for developers is that Microsoft Edge has default support for DASH, MSE, EME and CENC. With the help of this developers would be able to make plug-in free web video apps which would be compatible with multiple platforms and devices and MSE/EME security.

Common Encryption(CENC) encrypts content with universal industry standards with regular compressed file formats which improves quality of Media content on Web and removes bug which were present in DRM systems.

For more information about DASH MSE support in Microsoft Edge head to its official blog.
