HTC Desire 601 Review - A budget 4G smartphone with Style

Desire is the most successful series in HTC mobile phone segment and so to retain in the market HTC is putting up with new technology in this line segment. At MWC 2014 HTC announced two mid-range phone, HTC Desire 601 and HTC Desire 310. The brand has already released its Desire 600 phone and response from the market was surprising so HTC came with next installment of Desire 600 with some advancement.

Phone is targeted to mid-range segment so it has hardware and features according to the price of the phone. Phone has vivid display and capable processor and satisfying battery backup.I will discuss every pros and cons in new HTC Desire 601. Let's have a look at Desire 601's highlights:

    • Android 4.1 Jellybean operating system
    • Dual SIM
    • 4.5 inch super LCD2 Capacitive touch screen display
    • 960 x 540 pixels resolution
    • 1.2 GHz Quad-Core Qualcomm MSM8625Q Snapdragon 200 processor
    • 1GB of RAM
    • 8 Megapixel rear camera with LED Flash, f2.0 aperture and BSI Sensor
    • 0.3 Megapixel front facing camera
    • HD 720p video recording
    • 8Gb built-in storage, expandedable upto 64Gb with MicroSD Card
    • 3G (HSDPA up to 42 Mbps), WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX and GPS + GLONASS
    • 1860 mAh Lithium-Ion Standard-Battery

    Design and Packaging:

HTC Desire 601 will definitely have great design as it comes from market leader HTC, who is famous for body design of mobiles. HTC One has won many design awards so we can hope same for Desire 601. Its design quality would not be like HTC One as it falls in mediocre range phone. Though the phone is mediocre still the design part is well taken care by HTC and yes, it slightly does resemble the HTC one.

Design of HTC 601 is pretty good with dual front-facing speakers at top and touch sensitive home and back buttons below screen will let you to recall HTC One X. Body is not made up of metal but instead HTC has made use of plastic body with rubberized finish at back. Front of the phone looks decent with dual-speakers which helps you to listen your favorite songs clearly as sound will head towards you unlike other phones speaker which is placed at back of the phone. The front of the phone features a 4.5-inch of screen and above screen there is a front camera and sensors of the phone.

Back of the phone houses the 5MP camera with LED flash and at the center you will see HTC logo, while at the lower end you would see the red logo of Beats audio.Sides of the phone have slim bezel and has the volume rocker, power button, micro-USB and audio jack of 3.5mm. Back of the body is removable and you can swap the battery easily. Body is designed well by keeping the price in mind and has quite attractive and stiff design which is impressive.

    Display / Screen:

Display of HTC phones are most of the times very clear, bright and crisp. HTC make use of Super LCD for its flagship which outputs brighter and natural colour compare to AMOLED display. But HTC Desire 601 lacks with the feature of Super LCD display and instead has 4.5-inch display with qHD resolution of 960x540 pixels. Screen resolution is very low, not even a 720p HD screen which his commonly found in mid-range phone segment. On the up side the scree has Gorilla Glass 2 protection so you do not have to worry about the scratches on your display.

Price of the phone is mediocre but other companies provide much more in this price range. With qHD resolution you do not experience razor sharp clarity like other HTC phones. Still HTC Desire 601 manages to produce satisfying colors and vibrant output. With the BlinkFeed UI of the phone display looks attractive and seeks attention and lets you forget about low resolution or low pixel density of phone. Sunlight readability is average and viewing angle is quite wide. If you compare it with other brands, I wouldn’t say it’s the best display I have seen in the mid-range phones.

    Operating system and UI:

HTC Desire 601 runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean which is slightly disappointing as new flagship is expected to run on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and higher. Most of the phones launched now a day run atleast Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with promise of further upgrade from company, but HTC has taken one step behind to fit this phone on mid-range segment.

Only thing which HTC has given positive is BlinkFeed UI which makes the performance and touch very smooth and appealing. BlinkFeed works well with upgraded OS but Desire 601 is running on primitive OS so it irritates using UI with it. Hope HTC provides upgrade for its new flagship soon to overcome the issue of UI and OS.

    Hardware and Performance:

HTC Desire 601 comes with two-core processors to handle daily computing. In technical term it is packed with dual-core 1.4GHz processor and 1GB RAM on Snapdragon 400 chipset. There are companies who are providing quad-core processor with 1GB RAM at price far less than Desire 601. Two years back Samsung released Samsung S2 and this phone had same configuration of new HTC 601 this means HTC is not aware of market trend. Dual-core processor of HTC handles all heavy computing and multitasking very conveniently but still latest hardware is the expectation of everybody.

Performance of the phone is associated with Processor and RAM and which is quite low in Desire 601 phone. Phone is provided with Adreno 305 GPU which handles all graphic related instruction and is quite good configuration to run HD games and HD movies without any lag. You can save all your favorite stuff like apps, movies and games on 8GB onboard storage and this storage is further extensible up to 64GB with the help of microSD card. There are a good number of connectivity options in the HTC 601 and the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity was found to be good without any occasional dropping of connections.

Re: HTC Desire 601 Review - A budget 4G smartphone with Style

    Camera:

HTC Desire 601 has 5MP camera on the back of the phone which is quite normal in mediocre phones but there are some companies who are providing phone with more megapixels. 5MP camera is quite good as it has sensors almost same like HTC One flagship which only had 4 ultra pixels with that micron sensors. Desire 601 is not given with ultra pixel feature but same sensor of HTC One on 5MP camera. Picture captured with Desire 601 comes sharp and crisp with good color reproduction.

This 5 Megapixel Camera is capable of capturing videos and that too at full HD resolution of 1080p which is really impressive. Phone also has front camera of VGA resolution which will support you with video calls and video chat easily.Camera has many features like of HDR, Panorama and Zoe cam mode for multiple shot in one click and also you can edit your background at the same time. So overall the camera UI is really handy in the Desire 601.

    Battery:

Battery plays a key role in the phone because to give outstanding performance the phone is depended upon how many hours of battery backup does the battery provide. Battery of HTC Desire 601 is packed with 2100 mAh and can support your phone till 12 hours on 3G network and much more hours in 2G network.

Itís a Quite good battery backup for new HTC phone but it should have much more powerful because phone has large display and two-core processor which will consume the battery charge quickly. The battery performance is average on heavy browsing and gaming, but for average users it is just best. Most of the HTC phones come as non-removable battery model, thankfully, Battery is removable in this handset so you can swap the battery easily.

    Conclusion:

HTC Desire 601 is good stylish and handy phone inspired from top model of HTC phones. Phone is targeted towards mid-range market and keeping that in mind HTC has provided with average hardware and features. Phone has 4G network connectivity, decent camera and good battery backup. Desire 601 has lot more to add up or you may say much advancement is needed in the hardware and display of the phone. HTC could have given atleast quad-core processor for its new flagship instead of dual-core processor. Display of at least 720p is expected now but HTC landed with qHD display.

Camera and its sensor is just amazing and nothing much needed in this section but OS could have been more latest to make efficient use of UI installed in the phone. Battery backup is fine but bigger screen phone should have more strong battery than 2100mAh.If you are an average user not much in to latest gadget and not obsessed with best configuration in the phone then this phone will serve you the best. Phone can turn in to a good music gadget as it is powered by Beats audio and with the help of dual front speaker quality of the sound is very crisp and clear.

    Pros:
    • HTC One like Stylish Design
    • Affordable 4G-compatible Android Phone
    • HTC Sense 5 interface and smooth performance
    • Better Screen quality

    Cons:
    • Camera not so good in low light
    • Average battery backup
