    HTC Desire 816 Review

    Introduction:

HTC phones have gained a huge fan following lately. While MWC 2014 event was going on, all HTC lovers were waiting eagerly for the news of new flagships. Finally HTC announced its new flagship that would be huge in size and stuffed with new technology and amazing features. HTC is going to launch its new flagship named Desire 816. Huge display size of 5.5inches, powerful processor,1.5GB RAM, again a powerful GPU and decent battery makes this phone a complete unit.

Another good thing about the phone is it supports LTE connectivity. The price of the new phablet has not yet been announced though we can clearly see some cost cutting done in its built and design.I’ll take you through each features and specs of Desire 816 to give a clearer picture. Let us have a look at Desire 816’s highlights before going into deep review:

    • Android with HTC Sense 5.5
    • 5.5 inch Touch screen Display
    • 1280 x 720 pixels resolution
    • 1.6 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor
    • 1.5GB of RAM
    • Dual SIM (optional)
    • 13 Megapixel rear camera with LED Flash, f/2.2, 1080p HD recording
    • 5 Megapixel front-facing camera, f/2.8 720p HD recording
    • HTC BoomSound, Dual frontal stereo speakers with built-in amplifiers
    • 8GB internal memory, Memory slot available for microSD Card
    • 4G LTE / 3G, WiFi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX, GPS with a-GPS
    • 2600 mAh battery

    Design and Packaging:

The built of the HTC desire 816 is inspired by HTC One which won iconic design award last year. Desire 816 has good design and looks same like HTC One but of higher version. It has good body with 5.5 inch display covering the entire front and below the screen there are three capacitive buttons -one for back, one for options and the last one for home.

Above the display you will see 5MP front camera and besides lays the sensors and earpiece. Back of the phone has 13MP camera and below camera lays the LED flash which looks simple and nice. At center you will notice the embossed HTC tag. From back you will find the phone is rectangular slab with slight curved edges while from the front end you will notice it looks same like HTC One. To the left of the phone lies the power on/off button and below that there is volume control button. To the top edge of the body there is a 3.5mm Audio jack and below the phone lies the charging port and ear piece. It also has same BoomSound speakers for audio output which was found in HTC One, so you will have great hearing sound quality.

Phone comes with colorful back which is often found in most of the phone from Nokia, Apple and Motorola. All the colour are vibrant and looks very polite, white one looks very cheap though, as the body of the Desire 816 is plastic and white colour makes it look more cheap. Apple too came out with plastic body phone last year to eliminate the cost of phone and now HTC too adopted that same plan to come out with plastic body in the market, let’s see how much impact this plastic body puts on the people and market.

    Re: HTC Desire 816 Review

    Display / Screen:

Desire 816 comprise of huge display of 5.5 inch due to which we can consider the phone in the phablet section. Huge display means large functional area for work and playing.Display of Desire 816 comes with 1280x720 pixel resolution, which means phone does not have full HD resolution. Pixel density of display in HTC is 267ppi which allows you to have decent colour reproduction, clarity and viewing angle. Display is huge and HTC sense UI helps to make display look more realistic.

There is no news regarding the protection of screen, you will require a scratch-guard to protect the screen. HTC makes use of Super LCD for display but in new flagship this was not seen. HTC has made use of some ordinary screen which means you will not experience super clear display features on Desire 816. HTC has played smart move to make its flagship cost effective by providing IPS display instead of Super LCD2 or 3 and also reduced the resolution of the phone instead of providing full HD and good pixel density. Sunlight readability is fine and viewing angle is average.

    Hardware and Performance:

HTC’s new phone is equipped with heavy technology like quad-core processor, advanced chipset, RAM and GPU making this phone to stand amidst the tough competition. Performance of the phone on the hardware and its efficiency of work, so Desire 816 will not let you down in terms of performance. Phone is processed with 1.6GHz Quad-core processor on Snapdragon 400 chipset, 1.5GB RAM and Adreno 305 GPU. Processor of the phone will help to process the instruction very fast and efficiently and 1.5GB RAM installed will serve with best multitasking in the phone.

GPU from Adreno will handle all the graphic related instruction like HD Games, HD movies and other instructions. Phone has sufficient inbuilt storage of 8GB and is further expandable with the help of microSD card. You will not run out of memory easily on this phone as you can expand memory up to 64GB. HD games were tackled easily on this phone without any lags and hitch. Working on multiple browsers was smooth and there was no noticeable lag while operating on different tabs of browser. Overall performance of the phone is really good.

    Camera:

HTC has its own way of innovation in every section, like last year, they came up with concept of ‘Ultra-pixel’ which was really awesome.HTC has not provided Desire 816 with Ultra-pixel camera but instead it has gifted a 13MP camera which takes superior photos and shoots video at good resolution. Front camera of this phone has 5MP strength and can make video call at 720p which is impressive feature from HTC.

The 13 Megapixel camera captures image at 4160 x 3120 pixels and has many features like Geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, simultaneous HD video and image recording, HDR and Panorama. Using the different features and modes you can have best shot for your album or memories and keep it safe in storage. Video can be shot at 1080p resolution which is full HD. You can see all the details brightly and clearly. LED flash will help you to click pictures in low-light areas or in dark, flash provided is very powerful that even in dark room image would come out clearly.

    Re: HTC Desire 816 Review

    Operating System and Software:

HTC Desire 816 will run on latest Android 4.4.2 kitkat version as per the statement on paper. HTC will provide user interface of HTC Sense 5.5 to its new flagship which is also known as BlinkFeed UI. BlinkFeed UI was introduced with HTC One phone and was very smooth and very fast UI. Desire 816 has quad-core processor and powerful 1.5GB RAM which is enough to handle all the operations on Android 4.4.2 Kitkat OS.

Android 4.4.2 kitkat has feature to move all the apps and games from onboard storage to memory card installed on phone which will free some storage on phone, allowing the phone to perform better. Touch interface is smooth and looks friendly to operate. the operation of UI lies with performance of hardware, which is not an issue in Desire 816.

    Battery:

Battery plays an important role in smartphones, if the battery is weak and under performing there is no use of carrying a big phone with powerful hardware installed in it. Battery should be designed so well that it serves the phone at least 15 hours of heavy work. HTC has provided 2600mAh battery in its new flagship which backs the phone up to 15 hours in 3G network.

Battery is good but as you know the phone has big display, powerful hardware for multitasking so it will consume battery quickly. Considering the powerful hardware, the phone needs a better battery backup. if you are a heavy gamer then the battery might not last for a long time.

    Conclusion:

HTC has come out with very good phone which will fit in mediocre segment. All the features like processor, RAM and GPU is smartly installed and are commonly found in mid-range segment phone. Phone has good computing skills, thanks to the hardware of the phone. It has huge display of 5.5 inch which will be very convenient to use for work as well as for play. Display of the phone should have been HTC’s super LCD technology; however users get only IPS display which is little downgraded when we consider it with Super LCD of HTC. Even in the hardware section, chipset of the phone is Snapdragon 400 while world has moved to Snapdragon 801 chipset.

Body of the phone is full plastic and colourful; it looks good but the plastic body looks a bit cheap. Glossy back invites fingerprint and smudge very easily. Battery of the phone is average; phone has big display and powerful processor which will consume the battery quickly.

Overall the phone is good only if the price of this phone falls in mid-range phone. Huge cost cutting has been done by using plastic body, IPS technology and in the chipset section, so it expected that the phone be priced at a lower range. HTC’s phone usually comes a bit expensive and if its same with this phone then the demand for this phone is not expected to be much. So let’s wait and watch for the next announcement from HTC regarding the price of Desire 816.

    Pros:
    • Premium Build Quality
    • Amazing Camera

    Cons:
    • Non-removable battery.
    • Finger prints on the screen.
