    Sony Xperia Z2 Smartphone Review

At the MWC 2014 event, Sony came up with three Xperia devices: Sony Xperia Z2 and M2 smartphone and Xperia Z2 tablet. The Xperia Z1 smartphone launched last year was a huge hit in the market. The Xperia Z2, next phone in the series, is upgraded version of Z2. It has many new additions as well compared to the Xperia Z1. The new android smartphone would run on 4.4.2 KitKat version and boast a 5.2 inch triluminous display.

Apart from the wonderful display the highlight of the device is the Snapdragon 801 chipset, the upgraded version of 800 chipset, which is expected to give an outstanding result in the Z2. The phone, that is expected to come to the market by this march, is expected to be priced somewhere in between $500 to $600; since that’s the range where most of the Sony devices are priced. Official announcement of the price is not yet made. Before going into deep testing, lets have a look at the highlights of successor Sony Xperia Z2:

    • Android 4.4 KitKat Operating System
    • 5.2 inch Triluminos Display with Live Colour LED powered by X-Reality engine
    • 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution
    • 2.3 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor
    • 3GB of RAM
    • Adreno 330 GPU
    • 20.7 Megapixel rear camera with Exmos RS sensor and 4K video recording
    • 2.2 Megapixel front-facing camera with 1080p video recording
    • 16GB internal memory, expandable upto 64GB using microSD card
    • LTE /3G HSPA+, WiFi 820.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 with APT-X, GPS/ GLONASS, MHL 3.0, NFC
    • IP55 / IP58 rating for dust and water resistance
    • 3200 mAh Battery with STAMINA mode

    Design and Packaging:

Compared to the earlier version, the Z2 is lighter by 12g, slightly narrower and thinner, which is a big achievement. The front part of the device is covered by the 5.2inch triluminous display. Sony justifies its pricing by providing durable devices and giving good quality. As far as this device is concerned it is water proof and comes with IP58 certification. It has bezels above and below the display as we see in the other Xperia device.

Though its thinner than the Z1 it is slightly larger due to the display size. It feels really good to hold in hand and doesn’t really give the uneasiness of holding a huge phone. The phone comes with the micro SD slot, MicroUSB 2.0 port and the usual set of slots and buttons. The phone has a built in storage of 16GB and is expandable using the micro SD. As the phone is apt for using under water too, in order to avoid any damage, the slots are covered by flaps.

Sony xperia series lagged behind in good audio output, however this time, Sonyhas added stereo speakers to the Z2 to ensure excellent audio output. The phone has a premium look and feels really good in hands.

    Re: Sony Xperia Z2 Review

    Display / screen:

The Xperia Z2 camera has a huge display, similar to what most of the manufacturer are now providing their devices, a 5.2inch triluminous display. The screen features a 1080p resolution which is really eye-catching and adds to the real beauty of the device. Sony has used the same technology in the phone that we usually see in the Sony TV. Sony has used Live Colour LED technology to give extra sharpness to the images on the screen and make it look live. Truly, the display is life like without being over saturated.

Sunlight readability is really good and texts very distinctly visible. The display has a wide viewing angle without any colour washout. Watching extra sharp video would be possible in this smartphone. Also as the phone is powered with advanced chipset, good GPU and amazing display, playing heavy and high graphics game would be smooth and fun.

    Camera and Pictures:

To bring about further improvements in the new device and to make it more appealing, Sony has added a 20.7MP Exmor RS sensor to the new Xperia Z2. It comes with Sony G lens with f/2.0, 27mm wide angle. Images are going to be perfectly bright and sharp and look the way you want. It’s a good phone for the photographers as the camera technology is really advanced. A number is mode is available including the background Defocus and Vine.

Colour reproduction and brightness of the image is maintained at a perfect point. The shutter speed was found to be a bit slow and it takes around 4 sec to boot from sleeping mode. The camera is enabled with digital zoom while video recording to make the video’s even more exciting and lively. You can record 4K video at 30fps, 1080p video at 60fps and 720p videos at 120fps.

The camera also supports stead shots that cancels of the issues of shaky hands and the videos look smooth. You can a Images and videos are of a superior quality compared to the Z1, it may also be due to the improved display quality. The low light images is the area where Sony fell back in the earlier series, it is however expected to be good with the improvement in the quality of the camera in Z2.

    Hardware and Performance:

The smartphones powered by snapdragon 800 are considered really well, as the performance it provides is superfast and smooth. To ensure the same superfast performance, Sony has provided the Xperia Z2 with 2.3GhzQualcomm Snapdragon 801 which is faster than that of snapdragon 800. To top it all, the smartphone is supported by 3GB RAM for glitch free multitasking.

Performance vice the phone is expected to be better than the other competitors. Carry out speed browsing or heavy gaming in this phone very smoothly as it is very well supported by the processor. The GPU performance was found to be excellent and really striking. It is proper to say that the phone has an excellent combination of processor, RAM and GPU. It has an inbuilt memory of 16GB which is expandable using the micro SD slot. There should be no issues at all in the areas of performance and also connectivity.

    Re: Sony Xperia Z2 Review

    Operating System and User interface:

Speaking of the user interface, the Sony xperia Z2 runs on android 4.4 KitKat version that has really user friendly interface. The homescreen looks much better without the bars at the top and bottom now. There are good numbers of improvements in the new OS including some fixes in the quick notifications. Sony has added the double tap to wake option similar to the one in LG. Also you can see smart backlight control option which is very useful.

Sony has also come with office mode and train mode in the internal noise cancellation option. The only problem is you would have to use the Sony’s expensive headphones in order to get the proper results of noise cancellation. There are a lot of improvements in the UI compared to the earlier versions. Browsing the phone is even smoother and many new features are added.

    Battery:

Sony has charged this device with 3200mAh battery which is even stronger than 3000mAh battery found in Xperia Z1. Xperia Z1 dint have much battery problem and it stayed well for a really long time. So, Xperia Z2 is expected to stay for a long time too and support all the heavy video streaming and gaming without much concern.

    Conclusion:

The Sony Xperia Z2, with no doubt, is much advanced and upgraded compared to the previous version. You could buy it for its excellent screen quality and superfast processor. Performance of the phone would be just excellent given the best processor and 3GB RAM. I am not very sure about the low light performance of the camera but under normal conditions the results were excellent.

The overall quality of the built is excellent and waterproofing is an added advantage. Everybody may not like bezels added above and below the display but I felt the overall effect is good. As soon as the price and further details of the device is announced a clear picture of the phone would be available.
