    Nokia Lumia Icon (929) Review

Nokia Lumia Icon (929) is the latest Windows Phone 8 running smartphone from Nokia made especially for Verizon customers. Nokia promises competitive specs and features in the new Lumia coming with a price tag of $777. The new contender actually holds some really good features, one of them being its 5 inch display with 1080p HD AMOLED screen and 441ppi.

Compared to the other Lumia device launched lately with huge 6inch displays it’s smaller one but has dynamic quality. Processed by a quad core processor and 2GB RAM, Nokia ensures powerful performance and also the 20MP camera looks like perfect for the photographers. It looks like a slightly smaller version of the promising Lumia 1520. The price is really high so you need to give a proper thought about buying it, if you are price conscious.Have a look into the details of the phone and see whether it provides everything it promises. First let’s have a look at the highlights of Lumia Icon:

    • 5 Inch OLED Touch Screen display
    • 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution with 441ppi pixel density
    • 2.2Ghz Snapdragon 800 processor
    • 2GB RAM
    • 32GB built-in storage memory
    • 20MP PureView camera with 4 microphones
    • 2420 mAh battery

    Design and Packaging:

The Lumia icon has a box type looks with squared edges and lies flat on the surface. It has a polycarbonate body with an aluminium touch on the edges. It has a visually impactful look and feels premium too. It has 5.4 x 2.8 inch body and weighs about 5.9ounces which not very handy if you are using with one hand. The 5 inch AMOLED screen with 1080p looks dynamic and has rich colours and brightness.

The volume rocker, power button and the camera shutter are placed at the right edge like other Lumia device. The USB port is at the base while SIM card tray and the headset plugin is at the top edge. Removing the SIM card tray was a tough job however I took it as an advantage because it ensures that it won’t pop up anytime and anyways you don’t keep removing your SIM all the time.

Above the screen there is a 1.2MP front facing camera and the speaker grill along with light and proximity sensors. Turning back the device you can see the 20MP camera with the dual LED flash. in all there are 4 microphones in the icon, two in the front active while calling and two at back supporting video recording. Unfortunately there is no micro SD slot in this device, so expansion of memory is not possible.

Apart from this, the phone is processed by quad core processor and supported by 2GB RAM. Within the body the phone holds a non-removable2420mAh Li-ion battery supporting the phone for a really long time. Overall this device has a great design and looks good. Unlike the other Lumia device coming in bright eye catching colours the Lumia icon comes in black and white colours.

Re: Nokia Lumia Icon (929) Review

    Display / Screen :

The Icon features remarkable 5 inch display with 1080p HD AMOLED screen. The phone offers breath-taking display with every subject on the screen closely visible. Colours are bright and with 441ppi every aspect of the screen catches your eyes. The sunlight readability is great with the Nokia’s ClearBlack Display cutting down glare on the screen.

Also the gorilla glass on the top gives protection from scratches and gives wide viewing angle to the display. The screen brightness can be very well controlled from the setting options according to your choice. Also the screen gives response to the slightest touch and is very sensitive, so your can even navigate with the gloves on. Gaming and watching HD videos is a delight on this phone. You can also read your favorite books very comfortably, given the high resolution screen and minimum glare.

    Operating System and UI:

the Lumia Icon runs on the windows latest OS – windows 8 update 3 with the Nokia black software update. This update has brought in some better features to the Lumia. First thing you’d notice is the three columns of tile instead of two. This means users get more app tile on the screen at a glance, without even having to scroll; everything is just right in the front of your eyes.

The new update also supports a low energy Bluetooth thus longer battery life. It supports wireless charging and supports Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, Wi-Fi and GPS. One of the main highlight of the recent update was the glance screen. You can so all the notification at a go and also customize the glance screen background. The phone has a bundle of useful apps, like that in other Lumia device. The Microsoft office is really useful helping you to edit your documents and save them easily.

Apart from the Microsoft office there are cool apps for editing images that enhances the photos. The Here maps app is an awesome app letting you download maps and use them offline. Mix Radio is another new user friendly app which also offers customization. The windows store has recently seen good progress and there are many new useful apps added recently, the dearth of which android was highly preferred.

    Camera:

The Lumia Icon comes with a 20MP camera like the Lumia 1520. This camera is supported by six lens Carl Zeiss optical assembly and optical image stabilization for best photography experience. It comes with a f/2.4 aperture good enough to let pass maximum light for bright photos. Images are bright with vibrant colours and sharpness. Under bright light the photos looked perfect, there was no overexposure.

Under low light the dual LED flash helps a lot, images looked quite real in the night time. Supported by the PureView technology the camera gave amazing output with perfect exposure and clarity. The camera comes with a feature of oversampling where 5MP image is stored along with the 16MP image. You can store the images in both 16:9 aspect ratio or even the 4:3 ratio. The 20MP camera supports video recording at 1080p, full HD. Video is recorded at 30fps and is supported by video light and stereo sound to get the best output; the sound was loud and clear in the videos.

Apart from all this it supports Geo-tagging, face detection and comes with many more app support to enhance the images. The 1.2MP front camera is good for video chatting and recording at 720p. It is not ideal for photography since images are slightly blurred and dull. Concluding the camera part I would say, the 20MP camera offers amazing output and would be a good one for those loving photography.

Re: Nokia Lumia Icon (929) Review

    Performance:

The Nokia Lumia Icon (929) is processed by quad core 2.2 GHz Krait 400 processor with a Qualcomm snapdragon 800 chipset. Processing speed is fast and phone works very smoothly. Rarely, I found some lag mainly due to overload of animation in the phone. Otherwise, majority of the apps ran very smoothly, without much problem. The phone is supported by Adreno 330 GPU which is decent and you can see that graphics are really good.

The phone is supported by 2GB RAM and supports multitasking. I tried a heavy racing game with few apps running in the background to check the multi-tasking ability of the phone; the game ran very smoothly and did not hang or break in between. The phone has internal storage of 32GB which is non expandable as there is no micro SD slot. I think 32GB is enough for holding most of the heavy games and apps and storage shouldnít be a problem.

    Battery:

The Icon is powered by strong and long lasting 2420mAh Li-ion battery. The phone is powered for almost 2 days with average usage, by this battery. Under heavy few usage, with few hours of surfing on 3G, video streaming and little bit of gaming the phone lasts for more than 10Hrs, which is really good performance.

So battery life isnít a concern with this phone. You can keep the battery saver on so that when the battery is 20 %, automatically the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other power using apps are disconnected. This means a lot more hours of usage of the phone. You can push the battery life further by trying out other third party battery saver app from the store.

    Conclusion:

Coming to the concluding part, the Icon is packed with a powerful and fast processor and decent RAM. The screen is dynamic and of a very rich quality, the 20MP camera gives perfect images and the low light images are also impressive. The UI requires to be worked on and more customization options are required.

If you are not a great fan of flat designed handset then chuck it else its cool. The only problem I found is that battery is non removable and memory is non expandable. If you prefer storing numerous games, music and apps that requires a huge lot of space then itís not a very good option, you can buy it for its brilliant display, processing speed and camera.

    Pros:

    • Excelent OLED 1080p display with 441 ppi display
    • Fast, Speedy & consistent performance with powerful processor
    • Great 20-megapixel camera
    • Great internal speakers
    • Better grip with Metallic frame

    Cons:

    • No expandable MicroSD card slot
    • Lack of apps in Windows Phone
    • Not good camera quality in low light environment
