Installing Android 4.4 Kitkat Update in HTC One X

HTC One X is the most successful smartphone or late 2012 with combination of powerful specifications and hardware. The phone features a 4.7 Inch HD Super IPS LCD2 capacitive touchscreen display with 720 x 1280 pixels, built-in 16/32 GB storage memory, 1GB of RAM and 1.5 GHz Quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor with ULP GeForce CPU for smooth performance, better multitasking and of course better gaming. It also has an 8 Megapixel rear camera as well as 1.3 Megapixel front camera capable to record HD videos.

Now coming to OS, HTC One X was released with Android 4.0 ICS which later upgraded to 4.1 and the final OTA it received Android 4.2.2 JellyBean last year. Since then, One X Didn't received any update, neither there seems any sign of updates, surely not about the latest Android 4.4 Kitkat. However, HTC started rolling out Kitkat update for HTC One yesterday, if One X has to get, it may take couple of more months as there are many more latest Flagship smartphones for which HTC will prefer first.

So, if you are one of HTC One X users and cannot wait to taste out the Kitkat on your device, here is a good news for you. There is a Custom ROM available based on Android 4.4 Kitkat, which is successfully tested on One X. The ROM is stable and works great on this device with all new Kitkat features. If you want, you can flash it on your device and enjoy Kitkat experience right away. Just follow the step by step procedure provided below, but before that, lets have a look at some important requirements we need to meet to make the ROM work as it should.

    Pre-Requirements:

    • As installing any Custom ROM on any Android smartphone deletes all your data saved on the phone's storage, you should always backup your files and data. There are many apps available on Google Play for the same. Backup your contacts, logs, multimedia files, office docs, etc.
    • make sure your phone is charged atleast 60% because it should not get drained during the process.
    • You need to enable USB Debugging by going to phone's Settings > Developer Options.
    • Make sure your HTC One X is already Rooted and installed CWM. If not, go it now using the Guide here : Rooting HTC One X
    • Unlock the bootloader. Process for this also is provided in the above guide.
    • Download HTC One X USB Drivers and install them on your computer.
    • Download Kitkat Custom ROM and save it on your Desktop.
    • Download GApps and save them on your desktop.
    • Download and install ROM Manager App from Google on your smartphone.

Re: Installing Android 4.4 Kitkat Update in HTC One X

Once you are ready with all above requirements, we can now proceed to installation. But Note that this is not official method of updating One X to kitkat. Although the Custom ROM is tested successfully on One X variant, you will have to follow these installation on your Risk. If anything goes wrong with the device (although it should not) I or this website will not be responsible for anything. If you agree, lets move ahead and install Android 4.4 Kitkat on your One X:

    Installation Steps:

    • Start by connecting your One X to the computer where you installed the USB Drivers.
    • Copy both the downloaded Kitkat ROM Package and GApps to the phone's SD Card. make sure you copy the files in the root of SD Card to that it can be accessed easily during installation.
    • Now disconnect the cable and launch ROM Manager app on your phone. Select Boot to Recovery option.
    • Your phone should restart and boot to Recovery Mode.
    • Once in Recovery, use your volume rockers to scroll and select 'Wipe Cache Partition'
    • Now do the same and select 'Wipe Data/Factory reset'
    • Once done, select 'Install Zip From SD Card', browse to the SD Card root and select the Kitkat ROM Package to install.
    • Now wait and let the rom installation gets finished. Dont press any button during this process.
    • Once the installation is over, again select 'Install Zip from SD Card' and select Gapps. Let it install too.
    • Once completed, select the very top option "Reboot System Now" from the main Recovery screen.

That's it. You are done. Your phone should reboot now, and may take bit long time to reboot as this is the first boot with new ROM. So be patience and let it boot comfortably. Once booted, do your required settings and enjoy the new Android 4.4 Kitkat on your HTC One X. If you have query or come across any problem, feel free to reply here. We will help you to fix the error.

    Regards.
