How to update Google Nexus 4 to Android 4.4 Kitkat with AOSP Custom ROM

Google Nexus 4 is a great device offering 4.7inch screen on the front side with Quad Core CPU. It is a high end phone that is capable of running all latest games and application. But yet Google has not provided any new OS update for the same. Nexus 4 hardware simply states that is capable of running the latest android 4.4 android operating system. You can enjoy the full features and get amazing output. The performance will not be hampered at all, in fact you will face several improvements. This device has a 4.7inch IPS display on the front side with photo sphere camera support. Thanks to this new AOSP custom rom through which you can have Android 4.4 OS on the device.

This Kitkat based AOSP rom is designed on the stock rom which comes with all default android OS. You are not going to get any additional vendor based optimization. So if you are willing to move ahead then you can check out the below steps. But before moving ahead there is something you must remember. First this process requires rooting and it will overwrite the existing rom. This will void warranty. This process requires you to follow step by step procedure any mistake can cause bricked device. The process also voids the phone warranty. Before moving ahead just checkout the pre-requirements.

    Pre-Requirements:

    • Download and install the original Nexus 4 USB Drivers in your system.
    • You have to check that there must be atleast 60% battery left in your phone. It is well and good if the battery is above 80%.
    • Enable USB Debugging mode from the Development options.
    • The process needs rooting. If your device is not rooted then you will not be able to overwrite the rom. So here after rooting you must backup the existing rom. This will allow you to restore the original settings back if any issue occurs.
    • Install ClockWorkMod in your device. So that it will be easier to carry the rooting process.
    • Download AOSP ROM for Google Nexus 4
    • Download Gapps
    • There must be more than 500MB of space left in your SD card.

    Installing Kitkat in Nexus 4:

    • Below requirements I had told you to download AOSP ROM for Google Nexus 4 & GAPPS. Connect the phone to your pc with original usb cable and transfer the files in the memory card.
    • You will have to now boot your phone in recovery mode. For that first turn off the device and then hold the volume down + power button. Do not leave the button unless you see the boot screen.
    • On the recovery screen you can use the volume keys to navigate and make selections.
    • From the recovery menu first choose wipe complete data. Then choose factory reset. Then choose cache wipe.
    • Again go on the main menu and choose install from SD card. Choose the AOSP ROM for Google Nexus 4. Wait back until the setup is over. This is going to take some time.
    • The next thing you have to do is choose GAPPS.
    • Wait back for some time.
    • Once the setup is over restart your phone and enjoy the new rom.
